Ultrasound can be used for investigating and diagnosing many problems

An ultrasound scan, is a procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the inside of the body.

A small device called an ultrasound probe is used, which gives off high-frequency sound waves. You can’t hear these sound waves, but when they bounce off different parts of the body, they create “echoes” that are picked up by the probe and turned into a moving image on a monitor. 

Our ultrasound equipment also includes colour-flow doppler to indicate blood flow patterns, which is vital when assessing heart problems.

Ultrasound can be used for investigating and diagnosing many problems and conditions including:

 

  • Pregnancy scans
  • Looking for any abnormalities such as growths/tumours
  • Measuring the speed and direction of blood flow in certain areas of the body
  • Measuring the depth/size of internal organs or other structures such as tumours/growths
  • Imaging body organs such as the heart, gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidneys, spleen, gall bladder, eyes etc.
  • Guiding the veterinary surgeon during procedures such as biopsies, fluid sampling and catheterisation

Ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure, so as long as the patient can lie still for us, it can usually be performed without the need for any kind of sedation or anaesthesia.
