Blood Pressure Monitoring

We can offer blood pressure monitoring to cats as part of their routine health care

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a fairly common but potentially severe problem for older cats, and, over the past few years, the importance of monitoring blood pressure in older cats has been recognised by veterinary surgeons.

Castle Vets can offer blood pressure monitoring to cats as part of their routine health care, by appointment.

We recommend that any cat over the age of 7 years old is tested once a year, to make sure they do not have hypertension. In healthy cats this will be a record of what is normal for them and offers the possibility of detecting hypertension early.

Monitoring blood pressure in cats is a non-invasive and relatively straightforward procedure that can be carried out by a vet or a veterinary nurse at the practice. The procedure is very similar to human blood pressure testing and is measured with an instrument called a sphygmomanometer.

Castle Vets offer annual blood pressure monitoring tests which can be booked as an outpatient appointment with a qualified veterinary nurse and performed while you wait; this usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes.

Symptoms of high blood pressure in cats include:

  • behavioural changes
  • seizures
  • disorientation
  • blindness
  • weakness
  • heart murmurs
  • nosebleeds

If you are at all concerned about your cat’s health, please book him or her in to see a vet, rather than a veterinary nurse.
